Contraposition

The logical concept of contraposition states that if A implies B, then not B implies not A.
In other words, if something is a chair, then it's also a piece of furniture. And if it's not a piece a furniture, it must also not be a chair.
So if we understand that the white cube kind of exhibition space has this appearance because it's the biggest contrast to the often complex and colourful artwork it's meant to highlight, then by the simple principle of contraposition we can see that an unadorned white artwork would be better off inside a colourful space.
Colourful artwork imply quiet surroundings, so non-white (thus colourful) surroundings imply non-colourful (thus white) artwork.
